Spring Training in the Air: Burnett Departs for Pittsburgh, Mo Hints at Retirement!

Nothing can be more beautiful than oohing and ahhing over a classic Chanel handbag at Saks. Or getting Ghirardelli chocolate on sale for 75% off after Valentine’s Day. Or, of course, realizing your boys of summer are in the midst of spring training and ready to take on another season to bring the championship trophy back to NYC!

Well, there is one thing that can top it and that’s knowing full-on that A.J. Burnett has been dumped! Sorry, A.J., you were mediocre at best and often gave up six runs by the time the third inning rolled around. Good luck in P-burgh. Adios!

Lastly, there’s nothing more somber than knowing Mariano Rivera has strongly hinted at retirement. But, I must add and you may agree as well, his arm is not what it used to be. Sometimes it’s better to go out at top (or at least close to it) than falter. Just sayin’.

The Material Girl to Perform at the Sparkling Diamond in da Bronx

In other words, home plate. Check that since I already saw the floor plan (and consequently scored a ticket…natch)…the stage will be set up in the outfield! Madonna will perform at Yankee Stadium on September 6 and 8th and it’s no surprise both shows will sell out. Time to make new memories as the post-season will be upon us in September! Looking forward to vogue-ing in the House that George Built!

Yanks to Launch New His & Hers Fragrances

Okay, let’s admit, as die-hard of a fan that you and I both are (as you convincingly nod your head in agreement), it’s hard to believe the Yanks are creating a fragrance.

Or is it?

Call it brilliant branding when you think about it, if celebs like Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry can have a fragrance (let’s not forget the Biebs), so can we! Wonder what it will smell like though? I do like the Tiffany-infused interlocking NY logo on the bottle. Has a classy heir about it already!

Apparently it will go on sale at the start of the World Series this fall and no, it won’t have typical baseball smells – burned leather from Mo’s smokin’ cutter, sweat and tobacco. Ick.

The Yankees’ Family: Spotlight on Suzanne Molino Singleton

Often times when we watch Yankee games as fans, we’re focused of course, on the Yanks’ road to victory. However, let’s not forget about everyone who makes the franchise its winning team, such as the coaches, grounds crew, the winning team of broadcasters and of course, all of the families who support their careers and schedules!

When you think of the YES Network, for instance, you automatically think of Michael Kay, Ken Singleton, John Flaherty, Jack Curry, Kim Jones and crew. I recently had a lovely chat with Ken’s wife, Suzanne, for some insight into what it’s really like being a baseball wife!

As an accomplished writer, Suzanne blogs for the YES Network as Mrs. Singy and creates inspirational messages through her e-column for women, Snippets Inspiration. As we dished about favorite baseball movies (Angels in the Outfield) and favorite ballpark snack (soft pretzels), our convo switched to meaningful moments.

Considering Ken covers games throughout the Yanks during the season both home and on the road, out of bountiful baseball memories over the years (let’s not forget he was a broadcaster for the Montreal Expos for several years, too, pre-Yankees days), Suzanne has two fond memories in particular about the game. Or rather, touching moments she’ll never forget.

“Ken was a Baltimore Oriole and so we are constantly invited back to their events over the year and when Cal Ripken did his 2,131th consecutive game, when he broke Lou Gehrig’s record. they had two major events surrounding that,” she recalls.

“The first one’s when he tied it and the following evening when he broke it. That was huge. A wonderful display that night, the numbers rolled down on the warehouse. They had Ken and as many players they could gather from Cal’s day and…that’s actually one of the few times I was ever allowed on the field.”

Could you imagine capturing that moment in time? “I’ll never forget that walk through the tunnel that goes onto the field,” she says. “They introduced everybody…and it was like, ‘Oh my God.’ It was surreal. It was this rush for me and I because I got to be on the field with all the pomp and circumstance, that was wonderful.”

As for one other indelible moment etched in her mind? Going to Cooperstown with their family. As former teammate and friend Eddie Murray got inducted into the Hall of Fame, Suzanne, Ken and their kids were there to celebrate the occasion.
Naturally, fans swarmed around Ken for his autograph; Suzanne notes that was pretty special. “My kids got to see him in that light now.” Considering they know their dad more as a broadcaster rather than a ballplayer, she points out, “It was neat for them to see dad like that.” Sweet!
Stay tuned for more coverage of Yankee relatives, the inside scoop and people and faces that make up the fabric of our beloved team’s lives!

Five Ways to Slim Down, Yankee Stadium Style

Ode to New Year’s resolutions, right? When it comes to some of our numero uno plans to eat healthy and work it, where else but the Yankees can we look for a little inspiration? Here are five tips to slim down, Yankee Stadium-style.

 1. Reduce your simple carbs intake. According to the USDA Healthy Eating Pyramid, we should eat more whole grains which take longer to digest than complex carbs (white bread, pretzels, pasta, rice, sugary sweets). Complex carbs are often higher in fiber and provide you will more quantity of food for the same amount of calories as simple carbs. That means you can eat more for fewer calories, which will help you lose weight. So, in case you’re wondering how this fits into the stadium, every now and then I crave a Yankee Stadium jumbo hot pretzel. Who doesn’t, right? It’s also reminding me to only eat carbs when they’re reallllly worth it. The last time I checked, a stadium hot pretzel was eight Weight Watchers points. On the new POINTS plan, it’s probably more like 10 or 12. Ay carumba.
2. Start your day off with H20. A while ago on air John Flaherty mentioned a few tips for eating healthy. I think he was training for a triathlon at the time. He mentioned as soon as you wake up you should drink two glasses of lukewarm water to fill up. After all, it does a body good! Wait, that’s the slogan for milk…
3. Be prepared. Bananas, raisins and apples, oh my! Typically when I go to the stadium, I stock up my purse with several portable snacks and the same can be said of my non-game day outings. Mainly, it saves money and secondly, you don’t know when you’ll get stuck in a rain delay and have a longer game and therefore get hungry. Good rule of thumb to live by when you’re shopping or simply out and about. (In another post, we’ll dish about healthy options in the food court in the spirit of Eat This, Not That.)
4. Get moving! David Zinczenko’s, the Men’s Health and Women’s Health editor-in-chief and author of Eat This, Not That, says (or rather, tweets) it’s all about moving more. “LET’S MOVE! Sitting makes you fat, says new Tel Aviv study. Body fat naturally accumulates in areas left inactive.” So, the next time you’re at the stadium sitting for several hours (except for standing during a grand slam, curtain call or Mo coming out of the bullpen in the top of the ninth), why not do a few laps? The stadium is certainly big enough to check out different vantage points and people watch. Walking never felt so good! Of course, since it’s the off season you can’t exactly do that but there are ways to get creative where ever you are — like in a mall or museum, why not do some laps?
5. Bern, baby bern. Ever tried to dig deep on the treadmill as you’re jogging at the very end of your workout, trying to muster up strength to finish on a high note? Why not visualize running like a deer, a swift deer, check that, a graceful former centerfielder known as Bernie WilliamsThere’s nothing like a little Bernie to trot around the bases as you radiate that running nirvana.

Will Jorge Posada Return to the Yanks? Not Likely, Reporters Say

Considering the Yanks haven’t renewed Hip Hip Jorge’s contract, we must come out of denial now. The long-time Yankee is no longer a Bronx Bomber.

Check out my video as I dish about Jorge Posada on Park Avenue! (The second part is about Kim Kardashian as both clips refer to long-term employment and branding, my specialties).

‘Moneyball’ & Angelina on the National Pastime: “I Know Nothing About Baseball”

Why we do we love baseball so much? It’s a slow game as others, dare we repeat, mention it’s boring? For the love of the game, that’s why! I love it because I grew up with it and talk about it with my Dad. It’s a father-daughter bond, one that can never be replaced. It’s fun following a team both on and off the field for incredible things like Hope Week, too.

So you can imagine my delight when I attended the Moneyball red carpet at the Toronto Film Festival! I saw it in the fabled retro theater, the Winter Garden, as Brad Pitt brought the Billy Beane character to life. Sidebar: It was kind of interesting seeing David Justice on the red carpet, and more importantly my Yanks as they made cameo in the beginning of the flick, circa 2001!

If you haven’t seen this movie, both Brad and Jonah Hill have been nominated for Golden Globes. It’s a smart look at one man’s integrity to the game and how he continues to fight for the underdog, season after season.

ps. Find out what Angelina Jolie dished to us reporters about baseball as she graced the red carpet!

Got Rings?

If you haven’t visited the museum in the Yankee Stadium, let me tell ya, it’s a sight for sore eyes! Eye candy bliss, that is.

Sure, the exhibits about Gehrig, Steinbrenner and even the Subway Series from yesteryear (think Brooklyn Dodgers, NY Giants and our boys) are dazzling but what’s even more brilliant is the baseball bling designed by Balfour.

This is a permanent exhibit displaying a ring from all the championship years so the next time you’re stuck in a rain delay in the House that George Built, please check out the FREE museum and the beautiful rings on display!

My Reggie Jackson Interview!

I’ve interviewed Angelina Jolie. Madonna. Matt Damon. You name it, and I’m psyched to say I’ve probably interviewed them at some point. Imagine my excitement (insert squeal here) to interview the legendary Reggie Jackson back in May, thereby combining my two greatest passions: Journalism and Yankees baseball! Plus, the fact that he wore a World Series ring on his right hand, that inserts jewelry (my third) into the mix!

Mr. October dished profound words and was kind to sign my autograph book from a contest I won in the second grade. Some people cherish autographed baseballs, for me it was all about adding to the Yankee signatures in my HK book. Holla!

My Mark Teixeira Interview!

Ok, this site is gonna be about us — women who cheer for our legendary Yanks in our own girly, glam way as we rattle off stats like it’s nobody’s business. But for now until it’s completely ramped up, it’s all about me. Half-kidding.

I’ll update you on who I am and why I’m crazzzzzy for the Yanks, as it morphs into a lifestyle Yankee blog. Deal? <insert secret handshake here>

I heart Mark Teixeira. He’s down-to-earth. Normal. A good person. I interviewed him at a Harlem RBI event back in June at Cipriani. Baseball bliss! Here’s my piece for Time Out NY Kids.

In case you’re wondering, Tex wore his World Series ring on his ring finger on his left hand which was in his pocket for most of the interview but wow, that was some serious bling!
